Ingredients
1/2 lb. mozzarella cheese, grated
4 - 5 slices provolone cheese
1 (14.5 oz.) can of diced tomatoes
1 jar (15.5 oz ) favorite pizza or pasta sauce (we like Goodness from Fresh & Easy)
1 tsp. basil
1 tsp. oregano
2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed
1/4 C. onion, chopped
Salt and pepper to taste
Grated Parmesan cheese
2 Tbs. olive oil, plus more for greasing pans
1 T. sugar
1 basic pizza dough (we like Fresh & Easy)
Optional additions to the filling:
Cooked crumbled sweet or hot Italian sausage
Thin sliced Pepperoni
Sliced mushrooms
Slices of cored green pepper
Sliced ripe black olives
Instructions
- If adding sausage to filling, saute in a pan with 1 T. olive oil. Add the other toppings, like the mushrooms and green pepper, to marry the flavors.
- In a medium pot saute onions and garlic in 1 T. olive oil. Add basil, oregano, sugar, tomotoes and pasta sauce. Simmer for 20 minutes. Salt and pepper to taste.
- Oil one large round deep dish pans or cake pan. Put a little olive oil on your fingers and press and push the dough to the edge and up the sides of the pan. The dough should be 1/8 inch throughout. I hate this part, it takes awhile to get the dough to stick to the pan since it's cover with oil. Be patient.
- Layer mozarella cheese and provolone.
- Add filling(s).
- Add sauce.
- Liberally sprinkle with mozarella cheese, grated Parmesan cheese and drizzle the olive oil on top.
- Bake the pizza in a pre-heated 400 degree F oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until the top is golden and gooey and the crust is a light golden brown.
